About this Procedure
A hysteroscopy is a procedure to look inside the womb (uterus) using a thin tube with a small camera, called a hysteroscope. The NHS explains that the tube is passed through the vagina and cervix into the womb, and salt water is used to gently open the space so the doctor can see the lining clearly on a screen.
Hysteroscopy can help find the cause of symptoms such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, and it is used to investigate problems getting pregnant and repeated miscarriages. As well as diagnosing problems, it can treat them: during the same procedure a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken, or polyps and fibroids may be removed. It can also be used to remove a coil when the threads are missing.
According to the NHS, a hysteroscopy usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, though it can take longer if tissue is removed. It may be done with pain relief, a local anaesthetic, sedation or a general anaesthetic, depending on the procedure and your preferences. Most people go home the same day after a short rest; an overnight stay may be needed after a general anaesthetic. Period-like pain for a couple of days and light bleeding for up to a week are common.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy is a procedure that uses a thin tube with a small camera to look inside the womb. It is passed through the vagina and cervix, so no cuts are needed. It can diagnose problems in the womb lining and, during the same procedure, remove polyps or fibroids or take a small tissue sample.
Why is hysteroscopy done for fertility problems?
Hysteroscopy can help investigate problems getting pregnant and repeated miscarriages by showing whether there are polyps, fibroids or other issues inside the womb. The NHS says it is also used to find the cause of unexplained vaginal bleeding. Your fertility specialist decides whether you need one after reviewing your scans and history.
How much does hysteroscopy cost in India?
The cost of hysteroscopy in India depends on the hospital, whether it is diagnostic only or includes removal of polyps or fibroids, the type of anaesthesia, and the plan your specialist recommends after reviewing your reports, so Medwell does not publish a fixed price. Share your reports and Medwell will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from partner hospitals such as BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi and Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, usually within 24 hours.
How long does a hysteroscopy take and when can I go home?
According to the NHS, a hysteroscopy usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, but can take longer if tissue samples are taken or a fibroid or polyp is removed. Most people go home the same day after resting, although an overnight stay may be needed after a general anaesthetic. Period-like pain for a couple of days and spotting for up to a week are normal.
Is hysteroscopy safe?
The NHS says most hysteroscopies are quick and safe, without any problems. As with any procedure there is a small chance of complications, such as infection, which can be treated with antibiotics, or rarely a small hole in the wall of the womb when a polyp is removed. Your specialist will explain the risks and pain relief options beforehand.
