About this Procedure
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is surgery to relieve pain caused by pinched nerves or pressure on the spinal cord in the neck. The surgeon reaches the damaged disc from the front (anterior) of the neck, removes the disc and any bone spurs (discectomy), and then joins the two vertebrae together (fusion) so they heal as one solid bone.
ACDF may be recommended when non-surgical treatments have not helped and you have symptoms such as pain spreading down the arms, tingling and numbness in the hands and fingers, weakness in the hands and arms, balance problems or severe neck pain. Common causes include a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease and bone spurs pressing on nerves.
The operation is done under general anaesthetic and usually takes one to two hours. Through a 1–2 inch incision, usually horizontal, in the front of the neck, the surgeon gently moves the windpipe and food pipe aside, removes the disc and places bone graft material in the gap, often secured with a small metal plate and screws. Many people stay overnight and go home the next day. You may lose some neck flexibility, and it can take six months to a year for the fused bone to become solid.
