Knee Replacement in India: The Journey, Recovery and Package Estimates

A knee replacement replaces the damaged parts of the knee joint with metal and plastic parts. According to the NHS, the operation usually takes about one to two hours, most people leave hospital one to four days afterwards, and full recovery can take several months or more. For international patients, Medwell's package estimate for a one-sided knee replacement is USD 3,800 to 7,700; the final figure is confirmed only after the hospital has reviewed your reports.

This guide explains what the journey looks like, from the first report you send us to the moment your surgeon says you are ready to fly home.

What is a knee replacement and who needs one?

The NHS explains that knee replacement is most commonly used to treat pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis. It may be recommended when other treatments or lifestyle changes have not worked and knee pain is affecting daily life.

Total and partial knee replacement

  • Total knee replacement is the most common type. The lower end of the thigh bone and the upper end of the shin bone are replaced with metal and plastic parts.
  • Partial knee replacement may be used when arthritis affects only one half of the knee. The cut is smaller and the NHS notes that recovery should be quicker.

Which type is right for you, and whether you need one knee or both done, is a decision for your orthopaedic surgeon after reviewing your scans and examining you.

Medwell package estimates

Medwell's package estimate for a knee replacement on one side is USD 3,800 to 7,700. This is a package estimate, not a final price: it is confirmed only after the hospital has reviewed your medical reports and the surgeon has agreed a plan. If you may need both knees replaced, see our page on bilateral knee replacement and ask us for a personalised quote.

The figure you receive depends on the hospital and surgeon you choose and on what the medical review finds. To get yours, send us your reports and we will come back with a free, no-obligation personalised quote within 24 hours.

Before you travel

The NHS suggests that people preparing for knee replacement may be given advice on exercises to do before and after surgery, stopping smoking, eating a healthy diet and managing their weight. Your surgeon in India will tell you what applies to you.

It also helps to prepare for your return home: ask for help with day-to-day tasks, make frequently used things easy to reach, and arrange transport, because you will not be able to drive for several weeks after the operation.

The operation

Per the NHS, you will usually go into hospital on the day of your operation. You will either have a general anaesthetic, so you are asleep, or a spinal anaesthetic, so you are awake but have no feeling from the waist down. The surgeon removes the damaged ends of the bones and fits new parts to create the new joint. Afterwards you stay in a recovery room until you are fully awake.

Recovery: the milestones

Recovery varies with age and general health, but NHS guidance gives a useful picture of the typical timeline:

  • Soon after surgery: nurses and physiotherapists help you start walking, at first with crutches or a walking frame.
  • One to four days: you can usually go home if there are no signs of complications and you can get around safely on crutches.
  • About 10 days: stitches or clips are usually removed.
  • About 6 weeks: a follow-up appointment checks your progress; you may try walking without an aid if you feel ready. Most people wear compression stockings for at least six weeks.
  • Driving: wait at least six weeks after a total knee replacement, or three weeks after a partial one, and check with your doctor that you are fit to drive.
  • Work: usually after about six to 12 weeks, depending on your job.
  • Heavy household tasks: avoid lifting or moving anything heavy for the first three months.

The NHS also notes that knee replacements can last for 25 years.

How long should I plan to stay in India?

There is no single answer, and your surgeon decides when you are fit to fly. What we can say is that the hospital stay is only part of the picture. The NHS notes that air travel and major surgery both increase the risk of a blood clot, and it lists blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), among the possible complications of knee replacement.

For that reason, we suggest keeping your return flight flexible and staying close to the hospital after discharge. Medwell can book a hotel near your hospital, so physiotherapy sessions and check-ups are a short trip away, and arrange flights once your surgeon has given you the all-clear.

Possible complications

The NHS describes knee replacement as a common and safe procedure, and says most people have no complications. As with any operation, there are risks, including blood clots, wound infection, damage to nerves or tissue, and ongoing stiffness or pain. Your surgeon will explain the risks that apply to you. Before you fly home, make sure you know which symptoms need urgent attention and who to contact.
