About this Procedure
TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is an operation to reduce the size of the prostate gland. A thin tube with a camera and cutting tools is passed through the penis into the urethra, and small pieces of the prostate that are pressing on the urethra are removed. There are no cuts in the skin.
It is done when an enlarged prostate is making it hard to pass urine. TURP can help men who need to pass urine often, feel they have not emptied their bladder, take a long time to pass urine or have a slow or stop-start flow, or have urine leakage. It may also be used in some men with prostate cancer. Medicines and other procedures may be options, and your urologist will discuss these.
TURP is done in hospital under general anaesthetic or spinal anaesthetic. According to the NHS, the operation can take around an hour, depending on how much of the prostate needs to be removed. A catheter drains the bladder for a few days afterwards, and a sample of tissue is sent for testing. Most people leave hospital around 1 to 4 days after TURP. Usual activities can often be resumed around 2 to 4 weeks afterwards, but it can take up to 6 weeks to fully heal.

Who needs TURP prostate surgery?
TURP may be recommended for men whose enlarged prostate makes it hard to pass urine, causing a slow or stop-start flow, frequent urination, a feeling of incomplete emptying or leakage. You may be able to do your usual activities around 2 to 4 weeks afterwards, but it can take up to 6 weeks to fully heal. Avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise for around 6 weeks. Some blood in the urine 10 to 14 days later can be part of recovery.
