About this Procedure

A bilateral total hip replacement replaces both hip joints with artificial ones. In each hip, the NHS explains, the ball at the top of the thigh bone and the socket in the pelvis are replaced with metal, ceramic or plastic parts. Depending on your health and your surgeon's advice, both hips may be replaced during the same hospital admission or in two planned stages.

It may be considered when both hips are painful and stiff enough to have a big effect on your life and other treatments have not worked. As with a single hip replacement, the most common cause is osteoarthritis, with other causes including rheumatoid arthritis and damage after an injury. Replacing both hips is a bigger undertaking than replacing one, so your general health and fitness are assessed carefully before the plan is agreed.

Hip replacement is performed under a spinal anaesthetic (you are awake but numb from the waist down) or a general anaesthetic. The NHS says a single hip replacement usually takes about 1 to 2 hours; for both hips, your surgeon will advise how long the operation and hospital stay are likely to be. Physiotherapy starts soon after surgery to get you walking safely, and recovery takes several months.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bilateral total hip replacement?

A bilateral total hip replacement is surgery to replace both hip joints with artificial ones. In each hip, the ball and socket are replaced with metal, ceramic or plastic parts. Both hips may be done in the same admission or in two planned stages, depending on your health and your surgeon's advice.

Who is suitable for replacing both hips?

Bilateral hip replacement may be considered for people whose hips are both badly affected, most often by osteoarthritis, when pain and stiffness limit daily life and other treatments have not helped. Because it is a bigger operation than replacing one hip, your orthopaedic surgeon and anaesthetist assess your overall health before confirming suitability.

How much does bilateral total hip replacement cost in India?

Bilateral total hip replacement in India is estimated at USD 8,500 – 14,900 as a package at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR. The final figure depends on the hospital you choose, whether both hips are done in one admission or two stages, the implants and length of stay, and the plan your specialist makes after reviewing your reports. Medwell sends a free, no-obligation personalised quote, usually within 24 hours, so you can compare options before you travel.

How long will I need to stay in India for bilateral hip replacement?

The time needed in India for bilateral hip replacement depends on whether both hips are replaced together or in stages, and on how quickly you regain safe walking. For a single hip, the NHS says most people go home around 1 to 3 days after surgery. Your surgeon will advise on the expected hospital stay and when you can fly after both hips.

Is it safe to have both hips replaced?

Hip replacement is described by the NHS as a common and safe procedure, but every operation has risks, such as blood clots, infection, dislocation and a difference in leg length. Having both hips replaced is a larger undertaking, so your surgeon will check your fitness carefully and explain whether same-admission or staged surgery is safer for you.

Which hospitals in Delhi NCR offer bilateral total hip replacement?

Medwell arranges bilateral total hip replacement at 6 partner hospitals across Delhi NCR (Gurugram, New Delhi and Noida):

  • BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi
  • Paras Health, Gurugram
  • Artemis Hospital, Gurugram
  • Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram
  • Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi
  • Fortis Hospital, Noida

Medwell helps you choose the hospital and surgeon, and shares their advice on single-stage or staged surgery.

How do I book bilateral hip replacement in India with Medwell?

Share X-rays of both hips and your medical history with Medwell for a free, no-obligation personalised quote, usually within 24 hours. Medwell helps you choose the hospital and orthopaedic surgeon, books your consultation, provides visa invitation letter assistance and helps arrange flights, a hotel near the hospital, airport pickup and a companion's stay during your recovery.
