About this Procedure

A liver transplant is a major operation in which a diseased liver is removed and replaced with a healthy liver from a donor. It is a life-saving treatment for some people with cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. A liver can come from a deceased donor, or part of a liver can be given by a living donor, because the liver can regrow.

People who may need a liver transplant include those whose liver is failing because of long-term liver disease, when other treatments can no longer control the condition. There are three main stages: an assessment to check whether a transplant is suitable, finding a suitable donor liver, and the transplant operation. In India, living donation is regulated by law, and international patients usually need a suitable related living donor and approval from the hospital's authorisation committee before surgery.

The transplant is done under general anaesthetic. According to NHS Blood and Transplant, the operation often takes between 5 and 8 hours, depending on complexity. The first few days are spent in intensive care, and people can expect to be in hospital for 7 to 14 days. Lifelong anti-rejection medicines and regular transplant clinic visits follow.

Liver transplant is offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR: BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, and Artemis Hospital, Paras Health and Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram. Medwell helps patients and donors share reports, understand the approval documents and plan a longer stay.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a liver transplant?

A liver transplant is a major operation that removes a diseased liver and replaces it with a healthy liver from a donor. The new liver can come from a deceased donor, or part of a liver can be donated by a living donor. It is a life-saving treatment for some people with cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease.

Who needs a liver transplant?

A liver transplant may be needed by people with cirrhosis or end-stage liver disease whose liver is failing and can no longer be managed with other treatments. Candidates go through a detailed assessment to check that a transplant is suitable and safe for them. A transplant hepatologist and surgeon at a Medwell partner hospital decide after reviewing the reports.

Can international patients have a living donor liver transplant in India?

Yes, international patients can have a living donor liver transplant in India, but the donation is regulated by law. The donor is usually a close relative, both donor and recipient need medical visas, and the hospital's authorisation committee must review documents proving the relationship and approve the donation. Medwell explains the required documents before you travel.

How long is the hospital stay after a liver transplant?

After a liver transplant you can expect to be in hospital for about 7 to 14 days, according to NHS Blood and Transplant, starting with a few days in intensive care. The operation itself often takes 5 to 8 hours. International patients should plan an additional stay near the hospital for weekly transplant clinic visits before flying home.

How much does a liver transplant cost in India?

The cost of a liver transplant in India depends on the hospital, the specialist team, whether the donor is living or deceased, the evaluation of the donor and your overall health, so there is no single fixed price. Share your medical reports with Medwell and we will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from our partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, usually within 24 hours.
