About this Procedure

Gastric bypass is weight loss (bariatric) surgery that changes how the stomach and small intestine handle food. The NHS explains that the stomach is divided with staples to create a small pouch at the top, which is then attached to a lower part of the small intestine. Food passes from the pouch directly to the lower small intestine, so you feel full sooner and absorb fewer calories.

Weight loss surgery may be considered for people with a high body mass index (BMI) who have not been able to lose enough weight through diet, exercise and medicines, especially when they have conditions that could improve with weight loss, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or joint problems. The NHS notes that people of South Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African and some other backgrounds may be considered at a lower BMI. Surgery is not a quick fix and requires lifelong changes to eating and activity.

Gastric bypass is done by keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic. MedlinePlus says the surgery takes about 2 to 4 hours and most people stay in hospital for 1 to 4 days. You follow a staged diet, from fluids to puréed and soft foods, over several weeks, and the NHS says you can start returning to normal activities after 4 to 6 weeks. Regular follow-up and vitamin and mineral checks are needed for life.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass is weight loss surgery in which the stomach is stapled to form a small pouch that is connected directly to a lower part of the small intestine. This limits how much you can eat and reduces how many calories your body absorbs. It is usually done by keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic.

Who qualifies for gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass may be an option for people with severe obesity who have not lost enough weight through diet, exercise and medicines, particularly with conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. The NHS notes that people from South Asian, Middle Eastern and some other backgrounds may qualify at a lower BMI. Your bariatric surgeon confirms suitability.

How much does gastric bypass surgery cost in India?

The cost of gastric bypass surgery in India depends on the hospital, your health and BMI, the length of hospital stay, and the plan your specialist recommends after reviewing your reports, so Medwell does not publish a fixed price. Share your reports and Medwell will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from partner hospitals such as BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi and Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, usually within 24 hours.

How long is the hospital stay after gastric bypass?

MedlinePlus says gastric bypass surgery takes about 2 to 4 hours and most people stay in hospital for 1 to 4 days. The NHS says you can usually leave hospital 1 to 3 days after weight loss surgery and start to return to normal activities after 4 to 6 weeks, following a staged diet from fluids to soft food.

Is gastric bypass surgery safe?

The NHS describes weight loss surgery as a common and safe procedure, but as with any operation there are risks. These include blood clots, wound infection, a leak from the stomach or bowel, narrowing or blockage, gallstones and, in the long term, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Your bariatric team will explain these risks and lifelong follow-up needs.

Which hospitals in Delhi NCR offer gastric bypass surgery?

Medwell arranges gastric bypass surgery at 4 partner hospitals in Delhi NCR (Gurugram and New Delhi):

  • BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi
  • Artemis Hospital, Gurugram
  • Paras Health, Gurugram
