About this Procedure
Cystoscopy is a procedure that lets a urologist look inside the bladder. A thin tube with a camera (cystoscope) is gently passed through the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, and into the bladder. It can be used to diagnose problems and to treat some bladder conditions.
It may be recommended to investigate blood in the urine, repeated urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain that does not go away, or pain and difficulty when passing urine. It can also be used to take a small tissue sample (biopsy), remove bladder stones, check for and treat bladder cancer, or help treat an enlarged prostate.
There are two types. A flexible cystoscopy uses local anaesthetic gel and, according to the NHS, usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes; you can go home as soon as it is finished. A rigid cystoscopy is done under general or spinal anaesthetic, usually takes around 30 minutes, and most people go home within a few hours once they can pass urine. A little blood in the urine or stinging when passing urine for a few days is common.
Cystoscopy is offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, including BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, Fortis Memorial Research Institute and Artemis Hospital in Gurugram, and Fortis Hospital, Noida. It is often combined with a urology consultation so that further treatment can be planned in the same trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cystoscopy?
A cystoscopy is a procedure to look inside the bladder using a thin tube with a camera, called a cystoscope, passed through the urethra. It helps a urologist find the cause of bladder symptoms and can also be used to take a biopsy or treat some bladder conditions. It is done with local, spinal or general anaesthetic depending on the type.
Why would I need a cystoscopy?
You may need a cystoscopy to investigate blood in your urine, repeated urinary tract infections, incontinence, ongoing pelvic pain or problems passing urine. It is also used to remove bladder stones, take biopsies, and check for or treat bladder cancer. A urologist at a Medwell partner hospital confirms whether it is needed after reviewing your reports.
What is the difference between flexible and rigid cystoscopy?
A flexible cystoscopy uses a bendable scope and local anaesthetic gel and usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, according to the NHS; you can go home straight afterwards. A rigid cystoscopy uses a straight scope under general or spinal anaesthetic, takes around 30 minutes, and allows more treatment. Most people go home within a few hours.
How much does cystoscopy cost in India?
The cost of cystoscopy in India depends on the hospital, the specialist team, whether it is flexible or rigid, whether a biopsy or treatment is needed and your overall health, so there is no single fixed price. Share your medical reports with Medwell and we will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from our partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, usually within 24 hours.
Is cystoscopy safe?
Cystoscopy is a common procedure and serious complications are rare, according to the NHS. Some people have a urinary tract infection, a little blood in the urine or stinging when passing urine for a few days afterwards. Very rarely the bladder can be damaged. Your urologist explains the possible risks before the procedure.
