About this Procedure

Coronary angiography is a test that shows the inside of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. A special dye (contrast agent) is injected into the arteries through a thin tube, and X-ray images called angiograms show where the arteries are narrowed or blocked.

It is used to investigate chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart (angina), to check for coronary artery disease and the narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis) that can lead to a heart attack, and to help plan treatment such as angioplasty or bypass surgery. Your cardiologist may recommend it after symptoms or abnormal results from other heart tests.

You are usually awake. A local anaesthetic numbs the skin over an artery in the wrist or groin, and a catheter is guided to the heart using X-ray. According to the NHS, the test takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, and you can usually go home the same day, though some people stay overnight. If a narrowed artery is found, treatment such as angioplasty can sometimes be done at the same time. Bruising and soreness at the catheter site are common for a few days.

Coronary angiography is offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, including BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, Artemis Hospital and Paras Health in Gurugram, and Fortis Hospital, Noida. Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is coronary angiography?

Coronary angiography is an X-ray test that shows the arteries supplying the heart. A cardiologist passes a thin catheter from the wrist or groin to the heart, injects contrast dye, and takes X-ray images called angiograms. These show whether any coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked and help plan treatment such as angioplasty or bypass surgery.

Why would a cardiologist recommend a coronary angiogram?

A cardiologist may recommend a coronary angiogram to investigate chest pain (angina), to check for narrowed or blocked heart arteries after abnormal results from other tests, or to plan treatment such as stenting or bypass surgery. The specialist at a Medwell partner hospital confirms whether you need it after reviewing your reports and symptoms.

How long does coronary angiography take, and can I go home the same day?

Coronary angiography usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, according to the NHS. You lie still for a few hours afterwards and can usually go home the same day, although some people stay in hospital overnight. Most people can return to normal activities the next day but should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few days.

How much does coronary angiography cost in India?

The cost of coronary angiography in India depends on the hospital, the specialist team, whether the catheter goes through the wrist or groin, whether treatment is done at the same time and your overall health, so there is no single fixed price. Share your medical reports with Medwell and we will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from our partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, usually within 24 hours.

Is coronary angiography safe?

Coronary angiography is generally a safe procedure, according to the NHS. Bruising, soreness or a small lump where the catheter was inserted are common for a few days or weeks. There is a very small risk of more serious problems, such as an allergic reaction to the dye, a stroke or a heart attack. Your cardiologist explains the risks for you before the test.
