About this Procedure

A modified radical mastectomy (MRM) is a breast cancer operation that removes the breast tissue and skin, the nipple and areola, the lining over the main chest muscle, and some or all of the lymph nodes in the armpit. Unlike an older radical mastectomy, the chest muscles themselves are left in place. It is recommended when cancer is widespread in the breast tissue and has reached the lymph nodes, for example in some invasive ductal or lobular cancers and locally advanced breast cancer.

The operation is done under general anaesthetic and usually takes two to three hours. The surgeon removes the breast and lymph nodes through an incision across the chest and places one or more thin drains to collect fluid while the wound heals. Breast reconstruction may be done during the same operation or later, after other cancer treatment, and your surgeon will discuss the options with you.

Many people go home the same day or after one or two days. Drains usually stay in for about two to three weeks, and it is normal to feel tired and sore for about four to six weeks. Arm and shoulder exercises help recovery, and your team will explain how to reduce the risk of lymphoedema (arm swelling). Further treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy may be recommended after the tissue has been examined.

Breast cancer surgery is offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, including BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, Paras Health, Gurugram, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram and Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram. The treating breast surgeon confirms whether a modified radical mastectomy is right for you after reviewing your biopsy and scans.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a modified radical mastectomy (MRM)?

A modified radical mastectomy is breast cancer surgery that removes the breast tissue and skin, nipple and areola, the lining over the chest muscle, and some or all armpit lymph nodes. The chest muscles are left in place. It is offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, including BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital and Paras Health, Gurugram.

Who needs a modified radical mastectomy?

A modified radical mastectomy is usually recommended when breast cancer is widespread in the breast and has spread to the underarm lymph nodes, such as some invasive ductal or lobular cancers and locally advanced breast cancer. The treating breast surgeon confirms whether it suits you after reviewing your biopsy and scans.

How much does breast cancer surgery (MRM) cost in India?

Breast cancer surgery (modified radical mastectomy) in India is estimated at USD 3,000 – 5,300 as a package at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR. The final amount depends on the hospital chosen, whether reconstruction is done at the same time and the length of your stay. Medwell sends a free, no-obligation personalised quote, usually within 24 hours of receiving your reports, so you know what to expect before you travel.

How long is the hospital stay and recovery after a mastectomy?

Many people go home the same day or after one or two days following a mastectomy, and longer if reconstruction is done at the same time. According to Cleveland Clinic, it is normal to feel tired and sore for about four to six weeks after a modified radical mastectomy, and drains usually stay in for two to three weeks.

Is a modified radical mastectomy safe?

A modified radical mastectomy is a well-established breast cancer operation, but it carries risks such as wound problems, fluid collection, lymphoedema (arm swelling) and long-term chest wall pain. Removing more lymph nodes can raise the risk of lymphoedema. Your surgeon will explain your individual risks and how to lower them.
