About this Procedure

Coronary angioplasty and stenting, also called PTCA (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty) or PCI, is a procedure to widen narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. A small balloon is inflated inside the artery to push fatty deposits against the artery wall, and a short wire-mesh tube (stent) is usually left in place to keep the artery open.

It treats coronary heart disease caused by narrowed, hardened arteries (atherosclerosis). It may be recommended for angina, chest pain usually triggered by activity or stress, when medicines are not controlling symptoms, and it is also used as an emergency treatment after a heart attack. If many arteries are blocked, coronary bypass surgery may be considered instead.

Angioplasty is done under local anaesthetic, so you are awake. A catheter is inserted into an artery in the wrist, arm or groin and guided to the heart using X-ray. According to the NHS, the procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, and people treated for angina can normally go home the same day or the day after. MedlinePlus notes that complete recovery takes a week or less. You should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity and driving for at least a week.

Angioplasty and stenting are offered at Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, including BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, Artemis Hospital and Paras Health in Gurugram, and Fortis Flt. Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is angioplasty and stenting (PTCA)?

Angioplasty and stenting (PTCA) is a procedure that opens narrowed or blocked heart arteries. A cardiologist guides a catheter with a small balloon to the narrowed section, inflates it to widen the artery, and usually leaves a wire-mesh stent in place to keep it open. It is also called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Who needs coronary angioplasty?

Coronary angioplasty may be needed by people with coronary heart disease whose angina is not controlled by medicines, and it is used as an emergency treatment after a heart attack. If many arteries are blocked or their structure is unusual, bypass surgery may be advised instead. A cardiologist confirms the right treatment after reviewing your angiogram.

How long does angioplasty take and when can I go home?

Coronary angioplasty usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, according to the NHS. If you are treated for angina, you can normally go home the same day or the day after. MedlinePlus states that complete recovery takes a week or less. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity and driving for at least a week.

How much does angioplasty and stenting cost in India?

The cost of angioplasty and stenting in India depends on the hospital, the specialist team, the number and type of stents needed and your overall health, so there is no single fixed price. Share your medical reports with Medwell and we will send a free, no-obligation personalised quote from our partner hospitals in Delhi NCR, usually within 24 hours.

Is angioplasty safe?

Coronary angioplasty is one of the most common heart treatments, and because it does not need major incisions it is usually carried out safely, according to the NHS. The risk of serious complications, such as excessive bleeding, a heart attack or stroke, is generally small but depends on your age, general health and whether you have had a heart attack. Your cardiologist explains your individual risks.

Which hospitals in Delhi NCR offer Angioplasty and stenting?

Angioplasty and stenting is offered at 6 of Medwell's partner hospitals in Delhi NCR (New Delhi, Gurugram and Noida). Medwell helps you choose a hospital and cardiologist and books the procedure around your travel dates.
